Dotted red square on the alt-1 scan clue solver map?

When doing a scan clue, I see all the possible locations on the map. I also see a red square that shows my scan range. However, there also is a much larger red square with a dotted outline. It is really annoying because I used to tick off locations I had checked using the map, but any location within the larger square with a dotted outline also gets ticked off, even though it is not even in scan range.

The image below shows the red square (my scan range) and the dotted square (what for?). Trying to tick off locations inside my scan range actually ticks off all the locations you can see greyed out. One of those actually was the dig spot.

Does this dotted square have any use?

Look closely under your feet when scanning a clue. The circle pattern speeds up at 2x scan range, so that's what the dotted line shows. It can be a little hard to see but it give you 4x the scanning area compared to not using it so it's worth it.
