Hey there,
For several years I've used Hamachi to run old games in a psuedo LAN environment when their companies have dropped support. It's free, secure as you set it up, and super easy to use.
Adding Hamachi as a connection option (not sure how difficult) would reduce server load, allow usage to everyone without SSL or changing firewall settings, and no doubt other good things as well.

Browser don't see any difference between lan and the rest of the internet so this wouldn't change anything. Peer to peer would also require a complete rewrite of the code without any advantage over having a server, it also exposes your IP and rs players tend to ddos other people when they have their ip.
