Alt1 Crashing

Alt1 is constantly crashing for me. I have gone through the stickied topics, and some of the non-stickied topics. None of the fixes on here have worked. I will post the crash.txt below. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I had no issues with running Alt1 on this PC until about a few months ago. Then, it started crashing after a few minutes of running. I've updated my graphics drivers, changed my nvidia control panel 3D settings for the game client, changed the high DPI scaling thing, and none of it has worked. So I'm not sure where to go from here.

I had Windows 10 installed when I first started getting the issue. I have since upgraded to Windows 11. The fact that its an error from Windows Forms makes me think its an issue with a prereq install. So I am going to check to make sure I have all the prereqs installed still. I will report back shortly.

Alt1 error report

Tried different capture methods. Tried running as admin. Same results every time. Runs for a few minutes then crashes, producing the crash.txt. It has been the same error each time.

Re: Alt1 Crashing

Hey,

Since the issue started after upgrading to Windows 11, try the following steps:

Run Alt1 in Compatibility Mode:

  • Right-click the Alt1 executable file.

  • Select "Properties."

  • Go to the "Compatibility" tab.

  • Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows 10."

  • Click "Apply" and then "OK."

Increase User Object Limit:

  • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

  • Navigate to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\
  • Find the

    USERProcessHandleQuota

key. If it does not exist, create it (DWORD 32-bit value).

  • Increase its value to 20000 (default is 10000).

  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Check .NET Framework:

Reinstall Alt1:

  • Backup

    config.txt

    located at

    C:\Users\<YOURWINDOWSUSERNAME>\AppData\Local\Alt1Toolkit
  • Uninstall Alt1 from Control Panel > Programs and Features.

  • Download and install the latest version of Alt1 from the official site.

  • After installation, close Alt1 and replace the new

    config.txt

    with your backed-up version.

Update Windows 11:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

  • Check for updates and install any available updates.

Let me know if any of this worked.

This seems to have been the issue. I must have accidentally uninstalled the latest .NET at some point and not realized it. I reinstalled the latest, and it seems to be working fine for now. I will be testing throughout the day today, and will report back either tonight (~12 hours from now) or tomorrow morning.

But to be clear, the issue started BEFORE upgrading to windows 11. So I was getting this issue on both Windows 10, and Windows 11. Which makes sense if it was a .NET issue. Sorry for the confusion there.

I appreciate your help smile

My bad, I misread that.
Glad to see it helped regardless.

Re: Alt1 Crashing

It is still crashing, unfortunately. I tried all suggestions, and nothing has worked. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks

Damn...
I did some research and it appears to be some type of resource leak in the application.
Nonetheless, try the following:

Check for Conflicting Software
Sometimes, other software running in the background can cause conflicts. Try disabling or uninstalling any overlay software (e.g., Discord overlay, Nvidia GeForce Experience overlay, etc.) and antivirus software temporarily to see if the issue persists.

Run a System File Check
Corrupted system files can cause issues. Running a System File Check can help repair these files.

1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
2. Type the following command and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

3. Wait for the scan to complete and follow any on-screen instructions.

Update DirectX
Ensure that you have the latest version of DirectX installed. You can download the latest version from the Microsoft website: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.

Check for Memory Issues
Faulty RAM can cause applications to crash. Use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool to check for memory problems.

1. Press Win + R, type

mdsched.exe

, and press Enter.
2. Choose either "Restart now and check for problems" or "Check for problems the next time I start my computer."
3. Follow the on-screen instructions after the test completes.

Check for Application-Specific Logs
Alt1 might generate logs that can provide more detailed information about the crashes.

1. Navigate to the Alt1 installation directory.
2. Look for any log files and check their contents for additional clues.

Disable Hardware Acceleration
Disabling hardware acceleration for Alt1 can sometimes resolve crashing issues.

1. Right-click on the Alt1 shortcut or executable file.
2. Select "Properties."
3. Go to the "Compatibility" tab.
4. Check "Disable hardware graphics acceleration."
5. Click "Apply" and then "OK."

Perform a Clean Boot
A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts.

1. Press Win + R, type

msconfig

, and press Enter.
2. In the System Configuration window, go to the "Services" tab.
3. Check "Hide all Microsoft services."
4. Click "Disable all."
5. Go to the "Startup" tab and click "Open Task Manager."
6. In the Task Manager, disable all startup items.
7. Close Task Manager and click "OK" in the System Configuration window.
8. Restart your computer and try running Alt1 again.

Check Event Viewer
Windows Event Viewer can provide more details about the crashes.

1. Press Win + R, type

eventvwr

, and press Enter.
2. Go to "Windows Logs" > "Application."
3. Look for any error entries related to Alt1 and check the details.

Increase Desktop Heap Size
Increasing the desktop heap size can help if the issue is related to the creation of window handles.

1. Press Win + R, type

regedit

, and press Enter.
2. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems

3. Find the

Windows

key and double-click on it.
4. In the Value data field, look for the SharedSection parameter.

SharedSection=1024,20480,768

5. Increase the second and third values (e.g.,

SharedSection=1024,30720,1024

).
6. Click "OK" and restart your computer.

I know that some of these are a little bit far fetched, but you don't know until you try smile
If none if this fixed it, maybe @Skillbert can help you further.
