Clue Re-roll Advisor: reads the casket window and advises on re-rolls

Clue Re-roll Advisor is an Alt1 app for RS3 Treasure Trails. The app reads the Trail Complete! window. The app then tells you if the casket is worth a re-roll token.

Why the app is necessary

A re-roll replaces the complete reward with a new random reward. You cannot keep the old loot. You cannot keep single items from it. You get one token for each three clues of that tier. Therefore you must spend tokens only on bad caskets.

The interface shows a coin value. That value alone does not tell you if the casket is bad. The average casket is worth much more than the usual casket. Most caskets contain junk. A small number of caskets contain one item worth 700k or more.

What the app does

  • The app finds the Trail Complete! window on the screen.

  • The app reads the reward value, the token count and the re-roll progress.

  • You select the clue tier. The interface does not show the tier.

  • The app compares the value against the reward distribution for that tier.

  • The app shows one of three results.

The three results

  • Re-roll. The value is in the bottom third for that tier. You earn one token for each three clues. Thus you can afford to re-roll the worst third.

  • Keep and bank the token. The value is below the average but above the bottom third. Keep the casket. Save the token for a worse casket. If you are at the token cap, the app tells you to re-roll, because the next token you earn is lost.

  • Keep. The value is above the average. A re-roll loses value.

The numbers

The thresholds come from a Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation uses the wiki reward tables. It runs 400,000 caskets for each tier.

Tier Re-roll below Typical casket Break-even
easy 10,796 17,115 261,483
medium 25,869 36,303 368,483
hard 121,142 140,815 646,822
elite 124,572 162,339 2,736,402
master 274,003 374,327 5,000,666

Look at the difference between the typical casket and the break-even value. That difference is the reason a simple average is a bad rule.

Installation

Paste this link into the Alt1 browser address bar:

alt1://addapp/https://projects.scottcardone.com/clue-reroll-advisor/appconfig.json

Give the app screen capture permission. The app needs that permission to read the interface.

Limits

  • The app reads the interface text with the RS3 small caps font. The pixel template comes from a capture at 100% interface scale. If your scale is different, the app cannot find the window. A calibration script rebuilds the template from your own screenshot.

  • Item prices change. A script rebuilds the model from the reward tables.

  • The simulated averages for easy, medium and hard are lower than the averages published on the wiki. The wiki does not publish its table selection weights, so the two figures cannot be reconciled from the tables alone. The thresholds stay on the same side of the junk boundary in both cases.

The app uses the Alt1 libraries by Skillbert. The reward data comes from the RuneScape Wiki.

Feedback is welcome.
